Biography

Paul Aterman is committed to making justice systems simple, quick and fair – so that they work for the people that need to use them. He served as the Chairperson of the Social Security Tribunal of Canada from 2018 to 2023. Now he offers consulting services on administrative justice to tribunals, regulators and government. 

He is a lawyer with extensive experience in human rights, immigration and refugee matters, workers’ compensation and tribunal management. Mr. Aterman has held senior positions at the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, as a Vice-Chair of the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, as well as working at Canada’s Privy Council Office. 

Mr. Aterman holds a Bachelor of Arts from Oxford University and a Juris Doctor from the University of Toronto. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1988 and remains a member of the Law Society of Ontario. He volunteers as the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the Center for Plain Language, as a member of the International Plain Language Federation, and a member of CCAT’s Tribunal Excellence Committee.
