Biography

Murray Klippenstein has practiced for more than thirty years in Ontario and across Canada in organizational and litigation matters, and has appeared in numerous court cases at all levels of courts, involving issues of civil rights, environmental rights, First Nations and indigenous rights, affordable housing, employment and international human rights.  He founded and was the principle of the small firm of Klippensteins, until he was elected as a bencher of the Law Society of Ontario in 2019.   His legal and community and public interest work has been widely recognized through awards such as “Class Action Team of the Year” in 2021, from the Canadian Law Excellence Awards (regarding the civil liberties case of Good v. Toronto Police Services Board); “Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers in Canada award in 2014, from Canadian Lawyer Magazine (and again in 2015); “Champion of Justice Award” in 2010, from Aboriginal Legal Services of Toronto; “Social Justice Through Law Award” in 2006, from Osgoode Hall Law School; and the “Bob Borch Human Rights Award” in 2005, from the Ontario Federation of Labour.  Mr. Klippenstein graduated from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law in 1984, and has served on the Boards of the Canadian Environmental Law Association, the Canadian Environmental Defence Fund, Aboriginal Legal Service of Toronto, and others.  Mr. Klippenstein is a frequent guest speaker at law schools and conferences.
