Part-Time Adjudicator (Lay), Law Society Tribunal

The Law Society Tribunal requires several qualified individuals to serve a two-year renewable term as part-time lay adjudicators.

The Position:

The Tribunal is an independent adjudicative body within the Law Society of Ontario, consisting of a Chair, Vice-Chairs, members and tribunal staff. Adjudicators include lawyers, paralegals and lay people, who are neither lawyers nor paralegals. Lay adjudicators bring valuable perspectives to the Tribunal and help to ensure professional accountability.

Lay adjudicators are appointed by Convocation, the governing body of the Law Society, and must be approved by the Attorney General of Ontario. In addition to remuneration, the Tribunal provides all adjudicators with travel expenses.

Successful applicants must:

  • be committed to the protection of the public interest within the Law Society’s mandate, and to the integrity of the Tribunal process;
  • be committed to diversity and to maintaining fair, transparent processes that meet the highest professional standards.
  • be able to adhere to Tribunal procedures and meet standards of consistency and quality in their adjudication;

  • be able to commit to regular availability for both short and long hearings, including timely continuation dates;
  • be comfortable using word processing and basic web technology;
  • not be licensed by the Law Society of Ontario as lawyers or paralegals.

We are interested especially in candidates who can conduct hearings in French, have experience with Indigenous matters, have experience with mental health matters, or have familiarity with vulnerable groups involved in the legal system.

Adjudicators receive compensation for their work and reimbursement for travel if required.

To Apply:

An application package consists of a cover letter, curriculum vitae and two writing samples. The package must be sent by email, including “Lay Adjudicator Application” in the subject line, to lmccoy@lso.ca.

The deadline for applications is April 1, 2021.
