Biography

Shayne Kert is a sole practitioner practicing criminal and quasi-criminal law in Ontario and Nunavut.

She completed her B.A. in English (Theatre) at McGill University, and her law degree at the University of Toronto. She was called to the Ontario Bar in 1990, and to the Nunavut Bar in 2010.

In the course of her work as a defence counsel, Shayne has appeared before all levels of trial and appeal courts. In addition to her trial work in Ontario and Nunavut, Shayne also acts as an adjudicator. She has served as an Alternate Chair of the Ontario Review Board since 1999 (concerning individuals who have been found unfit to stand trial or not criminally responsible by reason of mental disorder), and as an Alternate Chair of the Nunavut Review Board since 2002. She is also a senior legal member of the Ontario Consent and Capacity Board, dealing with the civil law aspects of mental health and consent and capacity legislation. In early 2015, she was appointed an adjudicator for the Law Society Tribunal.

Shayne is a frequent lecturer and participant in continuing legal education, particularly in the areas of criminal and mental health law.
